Escaping the Grid: A Weekend in the Mountains

A Weekend in the Mountains
There is a unique kind of silence that you only find at high altitudes. After months of staring at screens and navigating the endless concrete maze of the city, my partner and I decided it was time to unplug. We packed up the car, left our laptops behind, and headed for the crisp air of the Pine Ridge Cabins.
Disconnecting isn't always easy, but the moment the cell service dropped to zero bars, a wave of genuine relief washed over us.
The Essentials of Packing Light
When you are heading into nature, you quickly realize how little you actually need. We challenged ourselves to bring only one backpack each. Here is what made the final cut:
- Versatile Layers: Thermal shirts, a waterproof shell, and a cozy fleece.
- Sturdy Footwear: Broken-in hiking boots to tackle the rocky trails.
- Analog Entertainment: Two paperback novels, a deck of cards, and a film camera.
- Trail Snacks: High-protein granola, dried fruit, and plenty of water.
"Look deep into nature, and then you will understand everything better." — Albert Einstein
Our Top Three Trail Discoveries
We spent the majority of our weekend exploring the local trails. If you ever find yourself in the Pine Ridge area, these three spots are an absolute must-see:
- Echo Valley Loop: A beginner-friendly, 3-mile hike that ends with a stunning view of the lower valley. Best experienced right at sunrise.
- The Whispering Pines Trail: A dense, shaded walk where the wind makes a distinct humming
